The Ukrainian banking system is a two-tiered system, comprising the central bank and commercial banks. The central bank of Ukraine is the National Bank of Ukraine (the “NBU”), vested with powers and authorities to establish the stability of the national currency of Ukraine (i.e. “hryvnia”, “UAH”), supervise participants of the banking system, and issue regulations governing the activity of Ukrainian commercial banks. Therefore, all commercial banks (including state-owned banks) operate under the supervision of the NBU.
